Monarch’s Last Trip in Steam 10th September 1960

Cosens's Monarch made her last trip in steam on 10th September 1960 leaving Trinity Wharf Weymouth around 9.30am to pass through the Town Bridge to her winter lay up berth in the Backwater.

Her last passenger trips were on 8th leaving Bournemouth for Swanage at 10.45am, 2.30pm & 4.15pm and then setting off for a single trip to Poole at 6pm where she arrived at 7pm. Passengers on this last trip included Mrs Eileen Pritchard, (PSPS member number 1), my father and me (aged 9).

On 9th she left Poole late around 9.30am arriving in Weymouth about 12.30pm and so missed the tide to take her through the bridge that day. Her deck crew were paid off on 9th so she borrowed Consul's ABs the following morning for the short trip through the bridge.

In November Cosens announced that she was to be sold. In March 1961 she left Weymouth for the breakers yard in Cork.
